The pandemic has caused an unprecedented economic crisis. In Barcelona, a clearly tourist city with significant fair activity, the impact has been intense. While awaiting recovery, the Barcelona City Council wants to put all possible ingredients on the table to ensure it arrives as soon as possible. The municipal government is working on an event that will contribute to rethinking the economic model of Barcelona and its metropolitan area, according to La Vanguardia. It is expected to be held between March and May, depending on how the pandemic evolves, and is expected to continue in the coming years.

"This initiative stems from the desire for Barcelona to have a voice, position, and leadership around the great global debates on economy and urban challenges, such as competitiveness, digitalization, reindustrialization, or the attraction and generation of talent," explains Barcelona's first deputy mayor, Jaume Collboni, in statements to The New Barcelona Post. "We want to relaunch Barcelona's economic promotion, with a shared strategy with social and economic agents, the business fabric, institutions, and citizens, to weave together an economic agenda looking towards 2030, with ambition and innovation," adds Collboni.

The event the City Council is working on, with a spirit similar to that of the Barcelona New Economy Week (BNEW) organized by the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona (CZFB), will combine in-person and telematic acts, in line with the model being established for events organized by Fira de Barcelona. This meeting is expected to last several days and have the Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHUB) as its main setting, taking into account that the council is committed to relaunching 22@ as the axis of the city's future economy, in addition to promoting the blue economy, as evidenced by the reform of the Port Olímpic, and the re-economization of the city center.
