Over the years, numerous Catalan flamenco singers have emerged, performing a unique fusion of Andalusian traditions and Catalan cultural heritage. Here we will learn about the life and work of some of the most prominent Catalan flamenco singers, whose music transcends borders and eras.

Although flamenco has its roots in Andalusia, Catalonia has played a crucial role in its development and dissemination. Since the early 20th century, Barcelona became a meeting point for flamenco artists. Tablaos, peñas, and festivals have been the stage for countless performances that have consolidated Catalonia as one of the promoting centers of flamenco.

Carmen Amaya

Considered one of the greatest bailaoras of all time, Carmen Amaya was born in the Somorrostro neighborhood of Barcelona. Her energetic style and technical prowess revolutionized flamenco, and although her fame is mainly due to her dancing, she was also an accomplished singer. Miguel Poveda

El Pescaílla

Antonio González Batista, known as El Pescaílla, is considered one of the fathers of Catalan rumba. Married to the famous dancer Lola Flores, El Pescaílla is an iconic figure whose music is still heard today.

Peret

Pedro Pubill Calaf, artistically known as Peret, was born in Mataró and is another of the great exponents of Catalan rumba. Known for hits like "Borriquito" and "Una lágrima", Peret brought Catalan rumba to an international audience, fusing gypsy and Latin rhythms. His legacy continues to influence new artists and keep the tradition of Catalan rumba alive.

Rosalía

Her album "El Mal Querer" revolutionized the genre by combining traditional flamenco with influences from urban music, trap, and reggaeton. Rosalía has received multiple awards, including a Latin Grammy, and her style has put flamenco and Catalan rumba on the map of contemporary music.

Las Migas

This female quartet formed in Barcelona in 2004 combines flamenco with other genres such as jazz and classical music. Las Migas have been recognized for their ability to fuse styles and for their commitment to traditional flamenco, while experimenting with new sounds.

La Pegatina

La Pegatina is an emblematic band of festive Catalan music, founded in 2003 in Montcada i Reixac, near Barcelona. With their energetic fusion of ska, Catalan rumba, reggae, and other genres, they have achieved success worldwide. La Pegatina started as a group of friends playing at local parties. Their first album, "Al Carrer!" (2007), recorded independently, quickly gained popularity. They celebrated their tenth anniversary at the Palau de la Música Catalana in 2013.

Sabor de Gràcia

Sabor de Gràcia is a group from Barcelona that has played a fundamental role in the revitalization and popularization of Catalan rumba. Formed in the Gràcia neighborhood in 1994, this group was founded by Sicus Carbonell, a passionate lover of music and gypsy culture. Since its beginnings, Sabor de Gràcia has been dedicated to preserving and renewing Catalan rumba. Their first album, "Tots els colors" (1997), was an immediate success on the local scene and laid the foundations for their career.

Estopa

Since their debut in 1999, Estopa has revolutionized the music scene with their unique blend of Catalan rumba, rock, and flamenco.
