Pasta can be cooked in as many ways as one can imagine or desire. Carbonara, pesto, or bolognese are just some of the infinite possibilities offered by this versatile ingredient. However, it is still difficult to find authentic quality pasta dishes in the Catalan capital that are faithful to the original Italian recipe and do not commit sacrileges such as adding cream to carbonara or pineapple to pizza. With the idea of offering the possibility of feeling like in a true Roman trattoria without leaving the comfort of home, Filippo Teofili and Enrique Garay founded Brutalia in 2023, a pasta dish delivery company. In just one year since its creation, the startup grew more than 285%, and now has two locations in Barcelona, with which they manage about 250 daily orders.

"We are convinced that in a few years pasta will experience aboom as the one currently experienced by thesmash-burguer, but when we started there was nothing like it, we were the first to create a company like ours," Teofili defends. In fact, in its beginnings, they decided to diversify the business and create two differentiated brands, one focused on pizza and the other on pasta, both for home delivery. However, they soon realized that in the Catalan capital there were already too many options for home delivery pizza but that, on the other hand, there was no other that opted for pasta gourmet. Thus they created Brutalia, always with the idea of offering quality dishes, with fresh and local products, as well as some imported directly from Italy. Its founders met precisely in Italy when they were teenagers through mutual friends, and reconnected years later in the Catalan capital, after having traveled a good part of the world, such as Australia or Cuba. It was in the summer of 2023 when Teofilio came up with the idea of founding thisstartup, and immediately thought of Garay to accompany him on this adventure. From their own capital and a loan granted by Banco Sabadell, they opened their first premises in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi neighborhood, which required an initial investment of 120,000 euros. A first establishment run hand in hand by Teofili and Garay, with no one else in the kitchen. Just a year and a half after its opening, Brutalia already has more than fifteen employees and has opened its second establishment in 22@, a strategic area not only because it allows them to cover areas that until now were too far from their Sarrià location, but also because they will serve residential areas but also areas with a high concentration of offices. Its founders foresee that this second location will represent 30% of revenues and close the year with a turnover of 2.5 million euros, after the one million they invoiced in 2024.Facing this year, thestartup also plans to consolidate itself in the Catalan capital with the opening of a third location and its offices, openings for which they are closing agreements with investment funds. Some premises that act as dark kitchens, that is, kitchens from which they prepare dishes to send for home delivery but to which one cannot go to consume the dishes there.
Brutalia's second location is in 22@.
One of their goals is also to expand into the metropolitan area; right now, for logistical reasons and to ensure that the food arrives hot as if you were consuming it in a restaurant, they cover from the Camp Nou area to the first streets of Badalona.Brutalia also foresees in its strategy for 2025 landing in autumn in the central area of Madrid, covering neighborhoods like Malasaña, Tetúan, or Chueca. In the medium term, their plans involve opening a branch in the main Spanish cities by 2027. "Our product builds loyalty on its own, because it is an authentic and quality product, so we have a large percentage of people who come back for more after having tried the dishes," says Garay. They currently manage about 250 orders a day, with Fridays and Sundays being the strong days and young people between 20 and 40 years old their majority audience. The pasta dishes they offer, among which are sauces such as truffled carbonara, theragú or thepestoGenoese, are around 12.90 euros, and they also have emblematic starters and desserts like tiramisu.
The menu includes sauces like truffled carbonara or 'ragú', as well as Italian starters and desserts.
A menu that they maintain will not undergo major changes in the coming years, although they are considering creating a new rangelight. However, they maintain that their dishes already represent a healthy alternative to typical home delivery meals, which usually include hamburgers or pizzas."Pasta is caloric, but these are good calories, which provide us with energy, but can also be eaten before sleeping without being heavy.", emphasizes Teofili. The founders of Brutalia foresee that home delivery pasta will experience a realboom in the coming years. "We started without references, creating the first designs in PowerPoint and we managed to become a source of inspiration for the companies that have opened after us,since right now they use the same type of paste, therigatoniand thefettuccine, as well as the same tubs, which the suppliers had to custom-make for us," highlights Garay.
