The pharmaceutical multinational Bayer has increased the workforce at its Sant Joan Despí (Barcelona) center by 100 employees in 2022, reaching 735 employees, a 15% increase. This was announced this Monday by the CEO of Bayer in the Iberian Peninsula, Bernardo Kanahuati, after meeting with the Minister of Business of the Generalitat, Roger Torrent.
Thus, the Baix Llobregat hub has grown from 471 to 735 employees in four years, representing a 56% increase. The 100 new professionals perform functions related to ICT, finance, and logistics and supply chain. For his part, Torrent highlighted the creation of jobs in the life sciences and health sector, which represents 8.7% of Catalonia's GDP.
Likewise, Torrent assured that the sector "has a pulling effect" for the entire productive fabric, especially from the point of view of innovation, and highlighted that in the last five years Catalonia has attracted more than 700 million euros of foreign investment in this area, reports ACN.
Bayer's Sant Joan Despí center, called Global Business Services (GBS), is dedicated to the application of data analysis in the value chain and the use of artificial intelligence to make product demand predictions. It serves 40% globally and 60% in the EMEA region, and among its achievements, according to Bayer, are the automation of the most repetitive and low-value-added tasks, the review via data analytics of the value chain to contribute to the goal of having a neutral emissions footprint by 2030, the use of artificial intelligence data to predict product demand or guarantee supplies from all suppliers.
The CEO of Bayer in the peninsula highlighted that the growth of this hub "is a reflection of the important work it performs" for Bayer, while "it allows Spain to continue positioning itself as a reference country" for its network. Globally, Bayer has around 100,000 employees and in 2021 achieved a turnover of 44.1 billion euros.
