Barcelona's theaters closed 2025 consolidating the best year in their history. For the second consecutive year, the sector has surpassed the threshold of 3 million spectators, reaching a total of 3,120,964 attendees, with an average occupancy of 64.21% and a revenue amounting to 98 million euros, almost 6% more than in 2024.
The figures confirm not only the definitive recovery of the sector, but also the loyalty of the theater audience to the city. "Staying above three million spectators is a sign of the solidity of theater in Barcelona," says the president of ADETCA, Isabel Vidal, who especially highlights the good performance of works in Catalan and of neighborhood theaters. "2025 can already be considered the best year in the history of theater in the city."
Small venues and theater in Catalan
One of the most relevant indicators of the year has been the growth of venues with less than 200 seats, which have gone from 320,209 spectators in 2024 to 398,428 in 2025, an increase of 24.4%. These venues have registered an average occupancy of 64.48% and a revenue exceeding 6 million euros, reinforcing their role as a key space for contemporary creation and proximity to the public.
"Attendance at works in Catalan has grown by 10% compared to the previous year"
2025 has also been an especially positive year for shows in Catalan. Attendance has grown to 1.51 million spectators, 10% more than the previous year, and its share of the total has increased by almost five points, to 48.66%. In addition, 7,483 performances in Catalan have been programmed, representing 56.57% of the total, consolidating a sustained upward trend.
Great successes and diverse programming
Regarding programming, 2025 has combined large productions with medium and small format proposals. Among the most watched shows are Mar i Cel and El Mago Pop at Teatre Victòria; El Fantasma de la Ópera at Tívoli; Improshow at Teatreneu; and L'amor venia amb taxi at Teatre Romea. In the circuit of small venues, attendance leaders included titles such as Corta el cable rojo (Teatre Muntaner), El principi d'Arquimedes and Ovelles (Espai Texas), or Y no quedará ninguno (Sala Ars).
Looking towards 2026
The good moment of the sector is also explained by joint initiatives such as Cap Butaca Buida, which will celebrate its third edition, or Catalunya Aixeca el Teló, which will reach 25 years. Actions designed to expand audiences and strengthen the link between theaters and citizens.
Looking ahead to 2026, the challenge is not so much to grow as to consolidate: maintain attendance levels, continue expanding audiences and reaffirm theater as one of the cultural pillars of Barcelona and Catalonia.
