Barcelona recovers the cultural and scientific capital status of Spain, along with Madrid, with the promotion of 37 organizations and institutions that will receive 20 million euros in investment, through the General State Budgets for 2022, to make the city's co-capital status effective.

Of the planned investment, mostly with a specific purpose, the Ministry of Culture and Sport will contribute 17.5 million euros which will be used to finance the main cultural institutions; while the Ministry of Science and Innovation will finance with another 2.5 million euros a program of direct aid for entities dedicated to scientific dissemination and R&D&i.

Among the entities and initiatives that will receive the resources, the Grec Festival stands out, with 1.57 million euros; the Picasso Foundation, with 1.5 million euros; and the Fundació Orfeó Català-Palau de la Música, with 1.1 million euros. The actions of this program will be executed directly by the Barcelona City Council

Similarly, lines of scientific culture will be promoted forthe promotion and dissemination of scientific research content among citizens, in this case through the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), with about 500,000 euros. Thus, up to a total of 37 public and private entities and institutions.

The actions of this program will be executed directly by the Barcelona City Council as well as by other public or private institutions, within the framework agreement signed in February 2020 between the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau.

The agreement recognizes Barcelona's condition as a main focus of cultural and scientific emission and reception and provides its cultural institutions with more resources to promote their objectives. It also contributes to exercising Barcelona's active co-leadership and fostering the exchange of experiences between cultural and scientific agents in Barcelona and Madrid.
