The celebration of the America's Cup in Barcelona starting in August is boosting the nautical sailing sector in all its aspects, including its cinematographic facet. The Sail In film and nautical culture festival, created in Bilbao, will land for the first time in the Catalan capital, with a cycle of three sessions at the CCCB framed within the Cultural Regatta that the City Council has promoted to bring the America's Cup closer to the public.
The cycle, in Sail In Tour format, will offer sessions on May 24, June 21, and July 26, with a special program that will feature a selection of screenings and documentaries to explore maritime culture in general, and sailing in particular. After the screenings, which will begin at 6 p.m., the public will be able to participate in a talk with relevant figures from the sailing world.
The cycle, which comes to Barcelona thanks to the City Council, the Provincial Council, and the Barcelona Capital Nàutica Foundation, aims to disseminate the values of nautical sports and promote maritime culture among the Barcelona and international public. To this end, it will present the best documentaries that have passed through previous editions of the festival, as well as recent and unreleased works, on topics as diverse as regatta competition, respect for the marine environment, and the role of women sailors.
The cycle will feature as a guest the person many consider the most famous sports sailor in history: Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. On May 24, he will participate in a talk after the screening of a documentary about his life, especially marked by having become in 1969 the first person to sail solo and non-stop around the world, a feat that earned him the title of Sir.
In addition to the documentary and talk by Knox-Johnston, the first session of the cycle will screen Philosopher of the sea, which is about the Swedish sailor Sven Yrvind. The documentary will commemorate his 15,000-mile solo journey from Ireland to New Zealand, in a first session of a festival that lands in Barcelona a decade after its creation.
