A 'spin-off' of the BSC innovates in breast cancer detection

FrontWave Imaging is working on ultrasound-based software that allows for the diagnosis of breast cancer painlessly and in young patients, unlike mammograms, which are uncomfortable and are started from the age of 40 due to the risks associated with X-rays.

Breast cancer is usually diagnosed through mammograms and magnetic resonances. The first uses X-rays and this limits the minimum age of patients to have them and their periodicity, in addition to being an uncomfortable and painful test, while the second has a very high cost and low availability. The alternative proposed by FrontWave Imaging, a spin-off of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and Imperial College London, is based on ultrasounds, a painless, safe technology that allows routine scans in younger patients, avoiding current limitations.

FrontWave Imaging is working on a software for breast image reconstruction with high resolution from ultrasounds. This program is based on supercomputing, which extracts all possible information from the data and generates high-fidelity and high-resolution images, and can be operated on any ultrasound tomography medical device. The company wants to orient its product to the device manufacturers market, led by multinationals such as Fujitsu, Siemens, HP, Hitachi or General Electric, and will offer its services to medical centers, clinics, hospitals and mutuals.

The project is promoted by Josep de la Puente, Lluís Guasch and Óscar Calderón, graduates in Physics from the University of Barcelona (UB) and PhDs from the University of Munich and Imperial College London. It has the commercial and business experience of the Barcelona firm 101 Venturas, which has initially invested 50,000 euros. During 2021, the startup plans to raise funding to develop its technological solution for a value of one million euros, through public sources, debt and capital increases. The goal is for the product to obtain all the necessary certifications to enter the market in 2023.
