Spaniards residing abroad: where do they live?

A total of 2.482.808 citizens with Spanish nationality resided abroad on January 1, 2018, which represents an increase of 3.2% (76,197 people) over the previous year.

This is indicated by the latest data from the Register of Spaniards Resident Abroad (PERE) recently published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

By continents, 61.8% of Spaniards registered abroad have their residence in America, 34.7% in Europe and 3.5% in the rest of the world.

By countries, Argentina is the one that currently receives more citizens with Spanish nationality, with a total of 457,204. The second country with more Spanish residents is France (253,036), while Venezuela occupies the third position with 167,255 people, although this is the country where during the last year had a greater reduction in the number of Spanish residents.

The fourth country in this ranking is Germany (154,876), the fifth United States (147,817) and the sixth, Cuba (139,851). The list of the first ten countries with the most Spanish residents in January 1, 2018 is completed with Mexico (135,955), Brazil (130,635), the United Kingdom (127,920) and Switzerland (119,117).

During the last year, the biggest increases of Spanish residents in foreign countries took place in the United Kingdom (12,141 more), the United States (11,012) and France (9,454). However, in Venezuela the figure was reduced by 13,242 registered with respect to those that were on January 1, 2017.
