ABOUT US

I t was easier for us to do nothing. The idea of a digital magazine about Barcelona and Catalonia has been brewing for the last seven years, in an environment where businesses are the main protagonists. The first four years were hard. A fierce economic downturn, declining indicators, restrained expansion strategies, disinvestments, layoffs and unemployment, cutbacks and the current political upheaval. The impact of digital transformation on the business models for virtually every sector was taken as a threat for some and a challenge for others, but it is, undoubtedly, a disruptive factor accompanied by a fair share of uncertainty. Despite all this, the main concern for entrepreneurs during these years has been to persevere, adapt and explore new strategies to stay in touch with their clients. Not bad at all. The president of Foment del Treball, Joaquim Gay de Montellà, would encourage his project team with these words: don’t be afraid to fail.

Simultaneously, a department of Communication (yes, with journalists), well trained to deliver bad news, with a desire to look the other way and in an attempt to take cover from the storm by revisiting the classics, issued a traditional magazine of thinking and culture. The magazine F, la revista del Foment issued its first number in September 2014. Valentí Puig, its director, issues a number every three month, with a great reception by both the critics and its readership. It continues uninterruptedly a long-lasting editorial tradition dating back in Foment to the year 1849, prior to the existence of the institution itself.

Perhaps as an attempt to go back to journalism or, who knows, to explore new trends of corporate communication in the digital era. The reason is unclear. Some ideas are stubborn and, despite attempts to hide them under hundreds of papers, end up prevailing. The New Barcelona Post is born out determination and materializes as the comeback of young journalist Raquel  Pérez Spínola. Devoted to algorithms, the big data and online journalism, we gave her an alternative to encourage her to stay with us. On the platform stood (beard, cap and tweenacts pipe) Enric Boluda M-Hût, our director. The poet is essential. While d’Ací i d’Allà had its first poet director when it was first published one century ago (1908), The New Barcelona Post could not stay behind. This is the core of our project. The technological platform is a piece of craftsmanship made by Josep Itarte, our Director of Technology. Everything that falls into his hands ends up in the cloud, except for him, as he is the one who has his feet firmly on the ground.

If you love Barcelona, you cannot help but looking on it favourably. Ricardo Feriche, editor, creative director, photographer. A true master. Everything he creates is beautiful and this is why he is our art director and editorial advisor. His motto is “ugliness does not exist” and this means that The New Barcelona Post will only explain and show beautiful stories. We asked Ismael Nafría, author of The Reinvention of The New York Times (read it, don’t miss it!), to lie to us a bit from Austin and confirm that this project makes sense and that it can be profitable. He knows all there is to know about the world of digital journalism and, now from Barcelona, can give an answer to all our queries. The essence of journalism remains, i.e. quality content. This is why traditional papers and magazines, if they continue offering quality, become digital and remain digital. Editorial advisor, thank you.

Last but not least, Jacobo Zabalo. Doctor in Liberal Arts, philosopher, musical critic. Head of the Arts section. His analysis clears many doubts and poses many more. Fascinating and unique. I only know that I know nothing, Jacobo. With all of us, Marta Suárez, who came to fill gaps, which she has successfully done enthusiastically. When temporary becomes permanent, it puts down roots and is there to stay.

And like the whole team of Foment, its General Secretary, Joan Pujol, has not wavered in the face of obstacles. -Go ahead with The New Barcelona Post, he ordered. Businesspeople, executives, scholars, entrepreneurs, creative editors… could be waiting for it. Under extraordinary circumstances, it can even happen that someone is determined to make a dream come true.

The news is that The New Barcelona Post is looking for good news, explains beautiful stories and fosters creativity and innovation. From Barcelona and Catalonia in general, we are grateful to all the businesses that give their support to this small communication channel and all our readership which, we hope, will come.
